Silver flakes

Silver flakes

Silver flakes originate as a byproduct during the smelting and refinement processes used to extract pure silver from ores mined primarily for their gold content. These operations are typically conducted at industrial-scale facilities, such as those found in Slovenia’s rich mineral deposits.

The process begins with crushing and grinding the raw ore into a fine powder to maximize surface area exposure for chemical reactions during refining. The mixture is then subjected to various methods like cyanidation or roasting, depending on the specific composition of the gold-silver ores (known as bullion).

Cyanidation involves leaching with a weak solution of sodium cyanide that dissolves both silver and gold. The precious metals are then recovered by electrolysis or precipitation, where they form pure metal particles suspended in liquid mediums which may later solidify into flakes due to evaporation processes.

Roasting is another common method used for extracting these metals from sulfide ores (like those found around Slovenian mines). In this process, the crushed and ground ore is heated in air or with a limited supply of oxygen at high temperatures to convert metallic compounds into oxides. The resulting mixture is then treated chemically to dissolve silver alongside other metals like copper, which are separated through various techniques such as solvent extraction (SX) and electro-winning processes.

During these refining stages, fine particles of pure silver can be carried away by air currents or suspended in solution until they settle out to form flakes due to gravitational forces or evaporation effects. These silver flakes are then collected for further purification and processing into industrial-grade materials suitable for various applications ranging from electronics manufacturing, jewelry production, photography chemicals (like black & white film development), and more.

The unique properties of these Slovenian mined silver flakes include high purity levels (>99% Ag) due to rigorous refining procedures coupled with a distinctive texture resulting from their formation process – often described as lightweight, flexible sheets that shimmer in light reflections, lending an attractive visual appeal for certain specialized uses.
